Sir Richard Branson is zondag 1 juli 2012 het Kanaal tussen Frankrijk en Groot-Brittannië overgestoken. Met zijn 61 jaar is hij daarmee de oudste persoon en heeft hij een record te pakken.
Eerdere pogingen van Richard Branson werden afgeblazen, al sinds 2010 probeert hij het Kanaal over te steken. Ook het eerste weekend van juni verliep de tocht niet geheel vlekkeloos. De bedoeling was om zaterdag met een groep van 10 personen de oversteek te maken. De start in Dymchurch, en dan richting Wimereux in Frankrijk.
Halverwege meldde de volgboot Branson, dat hij te ver downwind zo uitkomen, namelijk bij de the White Cliffs van Dover, waar geen strand is. Vanwege een te kleine kite lukte het Branson niet om verder upwind te komen.Daarom keerde hij terug.
De andere 9 van de groep redde de oversteek wel. Branson’s zoon Sam deed dat in een recordtijd van 2 uur 18 minuten, 12 minuten sneller dan het oude record. Met de groep zetten zij een record voor snelste groep die de oversteek kitesurft.
De volgende dag besloot Branson direct een tweede poging te wagen. Maar dan in tegengestelde richting. Deze keer succesvol in een tijd van 3 uur en 45 minuten. De tocht viel hem wel zwaar: “The trip was far more challenging than I thought, with 40 mph winds in the middle of the Channel and major waves.”
